Frequently Asked Questions
What are Picture Styles?
Almost every Canon DSLR and Mirrorless camera (since the release of Canon 5D) have these preinstalled picture styles:
Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Faithful, Neutral and Monochrome. They are different profiles that can be selected and altered to achieve a different colour and contrast response directly in camera.
There are 3 more slots called User Def1, 2 & 3 that can be used to import Custom Picture Styles via Canon's EOS Utility software.

Are these Picture Styles accurate?
Analog film is an art, and art is not accurate. Analog film processed in different temperatures give different results. When scanned in different scanners the colours can look totally different. Each of these picture styles are like an "average" of the various looks that a film can have. These profiles will not produce things like Halation, Bloom, Flicker or Grain, which are strong characteristics of analog film. These profiles aim to deliver analog-like colour mixtures modeled after famous film stocks, instead of the boring colours found in digital cameras.

Why are these Picture Styles different?
These Picture Styles were carefully designed to deliver filmic images with colour and contrast response based on famous film stocks, aiming to reduce time in Post-Production by providing a film-like colour graded image straight out of camera.

What do I need to know before buying custom Picture Styles?
1. Make sure your camera allows custom picture styles to be loaded into it.

2. It is necessary to have a Canon USB Cable. This allows you to connect your camera to a computer and load custom picture styles.

3. You must install a compatible version of Canon EOS Utility with your camera model in a computer in order to load custom picture styles into your camera.

4. Picture Styles do not affect RAW photos. They do affect histogram reading in camera.

5. Picture Styles can be applied to RAW photos through Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software on the "Tool Palette" window under the tab "Basic Adjustments" in the "Picture Style" drop-down menu by hitting "Browse".

6. Picture Styles are applied in camera to Videos and JPEGs. Once a Video or a JPEG was shot, the picture style that was selected can not be altered in
post-production. You can only make colour & contrast adjustments on the image with the "baked" picture style.

7. The Picture Styles ONLY work in sRGB Color Space.
a. In order to shoot JPEGs with these Picture styles, your camera MUST be set to sRGB Color Space. Videos are, by default, in sRGB color space unless
your camera shoots uncompressed raw video.

b. In order to apply custom Picture styles to RAW images using Canon DPP software, you must select sRGB color space under the tab "Adjustment", "Work color space".

8. If you already have a custom picture style loaded into your camera, keep in mind that it is not possible to export to a computer. If you have a copy of it, you can overwrite it in your camera by loading a new one. Then, when desired, load it again. If you do not have a copy and plan to use later, do not overwrite it.

Can I alter the default settings like Contrast, Saturation, Color Tone or Sharpness of these Picture Styles?
Yes! You should always adjust them by taste or need. Sometimes the default settings can be far from what is desired, feel free to adjust the settings to your liking.
